Case Study — Brand Strategy
Sixteen Years of Quiet Stewardship, Told for the First Time
For years, Eton Advisors operated on reputation alone, with no deliberate brand or communications strategy. WMC built a brand centered on the firm's technology platform, its thought leadership, and its founders' standing as pioneers of Goals-Based Investing.

01 — Situation
Years of reputation, with no deliberate strategy behind it
Eton's three founders left senior roles at UBS and U.S. Trust's multi-family office groups to build something more personal, and helped pioneer the goals-based investing framework now used across the industry. But for years, the firm operated on reputation alone—no deliberate brand or communications strategy behind it. As Eton shifted toward a growth posture—courting advisors, M&A targets, and prospective families alike—that gap became a liability.
A firm built by pioneers of Goals-Based Investing shouldn't be the last to tell people about it.
02 — Approach
Discovery before design
Before any language was written, WMC ran structured, recorded interview sessions with Eton's founders, leadership, and subject-matter experts across investments, wealth structuring, and family office services. Every line of the eventual narrative traces back to one of those conversations—pulled from the people who live the firm every day, not written from a template.
- Recorded founder & stakeholder interviews
- Messaging architecture, segmented by audience
- Identity system—mark, palette, photography, type
- Website design & development
- On-site brand film production
- Ongoing thought-leadership infrastructure
Before & After—From a description of services to a point of view
The clearest way to see the shift is side by side—the language Eton used to describe itself before WMC's rebrand, against the message it leads with today.
Before—Legacy Site
"A new standard of wealth management for prosperous families."
After—Current Site
"A Higher Standard of Stewardship for Multi-Generational Wealth."
-
Generic stock photography—a family on a beach, a model in a blue shirt → Macro nature photography, abstracted—wetlands, foliage, seed heads
-
Founders unnamed on the homepage and About page → Founders and leadership team named, credentialed, and quoted throughout
-
Heraldic crest logo with botanical engraving, no wordmark hierarchy → Refined wordmark and wheat-stalk mark, built for digital and print alike
-
One static About paragraph; no news, no insights, no team bios → Live Insights hub publishing market commentary, hires, and press placements
Messaging Architecture—One narrative, three audiences, no contradictions
The hardest part of Eton's rebrand wasn't finding language—it was reconciling two true but conflicting stories: a firm proud of sixteen years of quiet, founder-led discretion, now trying to signal growth and ambition to advisors and acquisition partners. WMC built a single messaging architecture that let both be true at once, then adapted it by audience.
Segment 01—Prospective Families
Led with "It Always Starts With You"—reframing sixteen years of discretion as depth of relationship, not lack of ambition.
Segment 02—Recruited Advisors
A standalone "Join Eton" narrative built around culture, continuity, and the resources of Eton Solutions.
Segment 03—M&A & Institutional Partners
Thought-leadership infrastructure and press-ready founder positioning, built to hold up under diligence.
Underneath all three audiences, the brand was built on the same three pillars—Eton's technology platform, its thought leadership, and its founders' standing as pioneers of Goals-Based Investing—positioning the firm to compete for talent, deals, and clients at once.
- Positioning Pillar: It always starts with you.
- Positioning Pillar: Not a standardized platform.
- Positioning Pillar: A multi-family office built around your family.
- Positioning Pillar: A higher standard of stewardship.

Brand Films—The brand, brought to life on camera
Built from the same discovery sessions that shaped the messaging, then produced on location. WMC identified who should be on camera with Eton's team, developed interview themes and scripts, and hired and directed a videographer for a full on-site shoot at Eton's Chapel Hill office—coordinating post-production through final edit.
- Join Eton—Culture, continuity, and the resources of Eton Solutions.
- Investments—The technology platform and thought leadership behind the firm.
- Wealth Structuring—A multi-family office built around your family.
- Family Office—A higher standard of stewardship for multi-generational wealth.
03 — Outcomes
A firm now visibly in motion
With a brand built to compete for talent, deals, and clients at once, Eton's momentum has become public—in leadership, in recognition, and in a press presence the firm never had before.
- A President joined to lead growth strategy—Brian Hughes—the kind of senior hire a firm attracts once "Join Eton" is a real narrative, not just a nav link.
- Family Wealth Report Award—won Multi-Family Office and named a finalist in three additional categories the same year.
- Partners featured in industry press, including Crain Currency and Family Wealth Report—coverage that didn't exist before the firm had a story to tell.
- A standing thought-leadership cadence—quarterly market reviews and firm news publishing through the new Insights hub.
- A messaging architecture built to serve families, advisors, and M&A partners at once, without contradiction.
- A full identity system—logo, palette, photography, type, and film—carried consistently across every touchpoint.
The Takeaway
Eton Advisors had earned its reputation over sixteen quiet years. WMC built a brand equal to it—one that could compete for talent, deals, and clients at once.
